STeP by OEKO-TEX® and Socially Responsible Workplaces
I don’t know about you, but if the pandemic and ensuing lockdowns have taught me anything, it’s that I took my former working environment completely for granted.
I, like so many others all over the world, have been working from home for almost a year now. And whilst there are obvious benefits, I won’t pretend that my new 30 second commute (from desk chair to sofa) isn’t far more appealing than an hour negotiating standstill rush-hour traffic, I can safely say that I miss the busy, friendly and safe environment in which I used to work.
Whilst some of us may never return to our daily work in the way that we used to, most of us are lucky enough to be able to say that our workplaces are socially responsible.
The definition of social responsibility is the obligation of a company’s management team towards the interests and welfare of the workforce or community, as well as the environment, that provides it with the resources not only to survive but to flourish.
Social responsibility can be broadly divided into two parts: human responsibility and environmental responsibility.
Human responsibility refers to the responsibility of the organisation towards the various parties associated with it. Environmental responsibility refers to the organisation’s responsibility towards environmental protection.
STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification is an independent certification system for brands, retailers and manufacturers from the textile and leather industry. STeP certifies that textiles are being produced in a way that is chemically safe, environmentally friendly and socially responsible.
Social responsibility is a core value of STeP with the scheme taking an integrated view of production conditions from sustainable perspectives. With great care and attention to detail, the STeP scheme analyses a facilities commitments to social responsibility, its own environmental performance, its commitments to environmental management as well as the protection of health and safety at work.
